Heaven On Earth

In biblical times, most people in Israel would have been familiar with the prophecies of the coming Messiah. But here was Mary, a young teenage girl of Nazareth, hearing from a glowing, angelic being that SHE would be the one to bring this life into the world. Not only that, but this baby would be the new King, and his kingdom would last forever. That’s a lot to take in—a REALLY big deal—and probably intimidating. But she answers, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.”

God often asks his people to act on faith even when—especially when—they don’t feel qualified, and the task seems too big and important. Even King David, once a small shepherd boy, likely didn’t realize the full scope of God’s plan to establish an eternal Kingdom through his line, through Jesus.

Each time God brings us an idea about meeting a need, showing love and compassion, or fighting injustice, and we obey, we bring the Kingdom of God into the here and now.

In 2015, South Carolina was hit hard by a storm that has been called “the 1,000-year flood.” Seeing the tremendous need from our Summerville Campus, I wanted to assist the families whose homes were damaged or destroyed by the floodwaters. But resources were limited and it was an overwhelming task. To do something, I volunteered with the local Long-Term Recovery Group. Over the next three years, we were able to assist more than 100 families with repairs to their homes, and show the heart of Christ actively at work in the community.

If God has given you an idea to make a difference in the lives of others, but it seems overwhelming, don’t ignore it! God doesn’t leave us on our own to provide solutions to the world. He is with us—our Emmanuel.
